Parents want their babies to have smooth skin when they are born and keep it, hence the expression ‘to have baby skin’. But it’s not always the case.
A little less than a third of infants suffers from acne. It is therefore a frequent and benign pathology. “But parents do not expect it and these little buttons often worry them”, warns Domitille Quentin, midwife.
Why does baby have pimples?
“Infant acne is caused by a significant hormone surge, with the future mother, in end of pregnancy, specifies the midwife. This surge of hormones is reflected in the newborn by causing an excess of sebum which results in small buttons. ”
Infant acne: how to recognize it?
“Infant acne appears in the weeks following the birth », Specifies the midwife. It affects babies up to the age of 4 months about.
Acne in infants is characterized, much like in adolescents, “by small white pimples or blackheads the size of a pinhead and by small red buttons, papules. Then there is inflammation. The buttons are more or less in relief, ”explains Domitille Quentin.
Here again, as in adolescence, the pimples are located on the face, and more precisely at the level of the play, from forehead, from chin, from nose, behind ears and at the level of scalp. “There may also be, sometimes, at the level of shoulders and upper torso », Informs the midwife.
How to treat infant acne?
There is no proper treatment for infant acne.
“It generally disappears between one and three weeks after the appearance of the first buttons”, specifies Ms. Quentin.
So nothing should be done to treat pimples? “Yes, there are certain hygiene procedures to be done,” agrees the midwife. Here are these recommendations:
- Cleanse twice a day acne pimples with cotton or gauze impregnated with mineral water or physiological serum. Then, pat dry them well and not by rubbing, with a soft cloth.
- Do not hesitate, also, during the day if baby spits up or if he drools, to theclean with a little mineral water and dry it well. It is necessary to avoid that his skin is wet.
Breast milk, a good anti-infective!
“Breastfeeding mothers can clean acne pimples of their baby with their milk, suggests the midwife. The latter is a good anti-infective. You just have to put a little of it on a cotton ball or a compress, or just let it run over your face and spread it with a clean finger, of course! ”
Good to know: Breast milk can also be used to treatnappy rash, the conjunctivitis of the infant… It has many qualities!
In contrast, ” if at six months the infant still has acne, it is advisable to consult the pediatrician or dermatologist, to ensure that it is not a larger infection, requiring treatment. But it is very rare. ”
The persistence of pimples after this age can be the cause, in particular, ofinfantile acne which can last until the age of about 5 years.
What you should not do
The midwife’s recommendations: – Pierce buttons because of the risk of superinfection that this inappropriate gesture can generate. – Apply on the buttons of anti-acne productsintended for teenager. They are not suitable for the fragile skin of infants. – Apply to the face of cosmetics too oily : cream, leave-in milk, lotion, oleocalcium liniment …
No bad omen for adolescence
Just because a baby has acne does not mean that he will also have it in his teenage years! This has nothing to do with. While parents aren’t worried about those unsightly little pimples on the face, they don’t persist for long.
