During the pregnancy, pregnant women tend to be constipated. However, we find two specific causes of diarrhea in pregnant women.
An adverse effect of iron supplementation
“A pregnant woman can suffer from diarrhea due to iron grip, the need for this mineral being very important during pregnancy ”, says Pr P. Duruelle.
Iron requirements are, in particular during the last two quarters, 30 mg per day. However, the iron supplementation can lead to side effects including diarrhea but also abdominal pain, nausea.
Diarrhea: what if it was appendicitis?
“Theappendicitis is more common in pregnant women because of the slowing of intestinal peristalsis, explains the obstetrician-gynecologist. And the signs are also different, with abdominal pain, but also diarrhea. ”
What treatment is offered? “Initially, the expectant mother is offered treatment with antibiotics made of metronidazole acting on digestive germs, at least 7-10 days, being very attentive to the evolution of symptoms during the first 48 to 72 hours. ”
It is only if this treatment fails that surgery is necessary.
The usual causes: gastro or food poisoning
In addition to these two specific causes of pregnancy, the reason most often found, especially in a family context, is gastroenteritis.
“The treatment is mainly based on fight against dehydration, warns the doctor. For this, it is important to forcing yourself to drink 2 to 3 glasses every hour cola soda, vegetable broth or sweet herbal teas which provide a necessary energy intake. We also adopt a adapted diet made from quince, apple, rice which you can also drink the cooking water, and other low-fat foods. ”
Manon Forthoffer, midwife, to add: “We avoid salads, raw vegetables, legumes and whole grains, difficult to digest, as well as diuretic drinks such as tea or coffee, and of course we do not drink alcohol! ”
We are watching signs of dehydration : dry mouth, cracked lips, fatigue and severe thirst. If you suffer from any of these signs, we consult his doctor without waiting.
Another more rare cause, food poisoning, especially after consuming raw cheese, cold meats, seafood, not recommended for pregnant women.
” The diarrhea can then be the symptom of listeriosis which also causes fever and flu-like symptoms, says the midwife. “” The treatment of diarrhea will then be the prescription of antibiotics based on amoxicillin “, adds Professor Deruelle. ”
What if it was a shrink?
“In front of a diarrhea, we must also ask ourselves the question ofanxiety, warns the midwife. This symptom is one of the manifestations of worry in a pregnant woman who may then need psychological support. ”
A risk of contractions
” The diarrhea leads to digestive spasms that can potentially stimulate the uterus and cause contractions, alert the midwife. It is then necessary to consult. ”
Can I take anti-diarrheal drugs during pregnancy?
Although the treatment of diarrhea is based mainly on hygieno-dietetic measures, “the pregnant woman can take, if necessary, a clay powder medicine as the Smecta (diosmectite), or based on loperamide, like Imodium ”, explains Manon Forthoffer.
If the ANSM (National Medicines Agency) has recommended, since February 28, 2019 to no longer administer drugs based on clay powder for children under two years old, due to a possible presence of tiny quantity of lead, for its part, the CRAT (Reference Center on Teratogenic Agents) informed, on March 14, 2019, that in the event of acute diarrhea without sign of seriousness, during pregnancy loperamide and clays could be taken at effective dosage.
