Liposuction has been around for more than twenty years and it is, in France, the second most performed cosmetic surgery procedure – just after breast augmentation – with more than 35,000 procedures per year (ISAPS global study, International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, of 2011).
Liposuction erases saddlebags, refines thighs and knees, and, to a lesser extent, a small round belly. The results immediately after the intervention are good when the skin is toned, and fortunately, because the note varies from 2000 to 4000 €.
A stable weight for a successful operation
Women are often happy, because they discover a more harmonious silhouette one or two months after the operation, the time for the edema to subside. The lack of harmony from which they suffered – often too many saddlebags – has disappeared. The downside is that some of them complain a few years later to have “taken everything back”. What is it really ? For the operation to be successful, Dr. Olivier Claude, plastic surgeon, insists on the importance of stabilizing your weight before the operation: “The ideal patient, on whom the liposuction will work best, has a BMI * between 20 and 25 and is a stable weight. “If she has a few extra pounds, she loses them first. Liposuction targets areas that do not depend on the diet, but on sex and genetics. ” Liposuction is not there to solve an overweight problem, but to remove bulges that are resistant to diet and exercise.
Target fat storage
If Dr. Olivier Claude insists so much on stabilizing weight, it is because the fat removed by liposuction will not return in the same way depending on whether it is superficial or deep. Superficial fat is distributed evenly over the body. You can pinch it between your fingers. Often caused by overeating, it is accessible to weight loss efforts, it depends little on genetics, and it is not localized. Fat susceptible to liposuction is deeper, harder, and localized. It is a storage fat that can be seen even in thin women. In reality, things are sometimes complex, and some areas are mixed, such as the abdomen: there is genetic fat – the “buoy” in men from the age of 30 – and fat linked to fashion. of life and too rich a diet.
The goal: to find a more harmonious silhouette
“If liposuction is performed on a woman with a stabilized weight, and the deep fat is targeted, the intervention will not prevent the patient from regaining weight, but the weight gain and therefore the silhouette will remain much more harmonious”, explains Dr. Claude. Because the possibility of gaining weight persists. This is the reason why women are often advised to do liposuction after all their pregnancies.
If the aesthetic benefit is indeed real, Professor Max Lafontan, research director at Inserm, a specialist in fats, affirms that liposuction can lead to another distribution of fats.
“In about 40% of cases, removing fat in one area is likely to trigger an increase in fat mass in another area of the body. ”
Prof. Lafontan cites the example of women who, after their liposuction, have regained fat in… the breasts.
