The renal colic leaves a bad memory as the pain is strong. It is explained by the rei blockingnot. Normally, urine flows through the ureters, the two channels that connect the kidneys to the bladder. When this passage is blocked, the retention of urine causes the kidney to swell. It is this pressure that is causing the pain.
More risks in pregnant women
In most cases, the obstacle that hinders the passage of urine is a kidney stone a kind of small pebble composed of crystals of mineral origin. “
Pregnancy is not particularly conducive to kidney stones. But the kidney tends to dilate. Suddenly, the calculation moves more easily. The risk of it becoming blocked in the ureter is higher, ”observes Prof. Olivier Traxer, urologist at Tenon Hospital (Paris) and member of the lithiasis committee of the French Association of Urology.
During pregnancy, another phenomenon can occur. By taking volume, the fetus sometimes presses on the right ureter, which can block urine and trigger renal colic. “In general, the pain is less violent, but more stabbing and more persistent than in a classic attack of renal colic”, remarks the urologist.
To treat the pain, the doctor will be very careful in the choice of drugs. The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the most effective treatment for renal colic, are contraindicated during pregnancy. The only solution: calm the pain using paracetamol.
The isurgical intervention remains possible, in the event of complications (the appearance of a fever for example). It consists of placing a drain, by natural means and under general anesthesia. This probe will allow the urine to bypass the stone and evacuate. It will be removed after the baby is born, along with the calculation.
Finally, treat renal colic during pregnancy presents many difficulties. Professor Traxer advises pregnant women, who know they are prone to kidney stones, to anticipate the problem.
“Make sure you don’t have any stones and have them removed before you get pregnant. Because, afterwards, we are limited in our treatments. Most present a risk for the mother and for the baby, ”he recalls.
