Do your hair despite hair loss to face your gaze and that of others, take care of your skin, apply makeup to forget about fatigue …
Not all women who have cancer have the energy to do so, but achieving it repairs a deteriorated self-image.
“Appearance and well-being are linked. However, the consequences of treatment are difficult to bear and accept. Women see their physique changing and find it hard to admit it, ”says Aury Caltagirone, socio-esthetician.
Responding to their aesthetic concerns allows them to regain control in a period when, often, they are not masters of the decisions that are made.
“Helping them to regain femininity and confidence, to feel beautiful, gives them a breath of fresh air. For some, it’s a return to life, ”observes Aury Caltagirone.
Address hair loss
Hair loss is the most feared image assault.
It is better to choose it before the hair falls out because you are still sure of yourself, and you can opt for a model as close as possible to your hairstyle.
Better avoid a too dark shade, which makes you look tired, and try a lot, looking at yourself in a full-length mirror, because “The wig must be adapted to the line, to the wardrobe, to the general appearance.
Comfortable and light, it is adjusted to the circumference of the head, even if it means having it readjusted by a professional if it relaxes a little ”, specifies Aury Caltagirone.
In centers with a Social Security approval number (Any d’Avray, Henry Margu, Comptoir de vie, L’Embellie), hair prostheses are covered up to € 125. But the price of a very natural wig can cost € 600, that of a member with which you can sleep or take a shower, € 1,200.

Turbans and scarves
We can add a few locks of hair for a less naked appearance (from 25 € for the turban, 10 € for the locks). The whole is covered by Social Security.
Some models are ready to use, ideal for women who have difficulty raising their arms; others just have to tie. Scarves are tied at the side for a more fashionable effect.
The pro tip:
“Go for natural materials, cheerful colors and prints, and accessorize with dangling earrings. ”
Find supple and hydrated skin
Chemotherapy makes the skin dull and rough, radiation therapy can cause redness and erythema, and targeted therapy can cause folliculitis.
For Pr Brigitte Dreno, dermatologist and oncologist, “taking charge of these skin effects is essential with gentle cleansing gels that respect the skin’s pH, and very moisturizing, non-comedogenic creams, to be chosen from brands for sensitive skin. having been the subject of studies on injured skin. ”
Professor Dreno advises against showers that are too hot, irritating scrubs, Marseille soap and products, even organic, with perfumes or extracts of vegetables, flowers or plants, sensitizers and photosensitizers.
To properly hydrate the face, we choose rich creams with an SPF 50 in the event of sun exposure, which will also be used to hydrate the skull in the evening, so as not to interfere with the hold of the wig.
And for the body, hands and feet, treatments containing 5 to 10% urea to act against dehydration.
“Massaging yourself at the time of application is a good way to get back in touch with your skin and body”, says Christine Raymond, esthetician.

The nails of the hands and feet, weakened by chemotherapy, must be nourished with an oil for nails and cuticles while avoiding filing them or pulling the skins or cuticles.
To protect them during a treatment based on Taxotere or Taxol, Aury Caltagirone recommends applying a silicon base, then two coats of a dark silicon varnish to block UV rays, and cover with a top coat. “This method preserves the nails. Repeat every 8 days after removing all layers with a non-acetone remover. ”

Beautify the look
Redensify the eyebrows
For some women, eyebrow loss is very traumatic. If they are sparse, a pencil drawing is sufficient. The lead allows you to draw hatching, to imitate the hairs. The pencil is the color of the hair or the wig, or even a lighter shade.
If they have disappeared, Marine Pavia, beautician, explains how to do it: “Place the pencil vertically, along the nostril. Draw a dot at the inner corner of the eyebrow. Rotate the pencil. Once it aligns with the iris, draw a point higher. Drag the pencil to the outer corner. Draw another point. Connect the dots to redraw the shape of the eyebrow, and blend with the brush tip of the pencil. ”
The alternative: stencils, to redraw an impeccable eyebrow. Finally, there are artificial eyebrows, made of natural hairs, usable 2 to 3 months, which adhere to the skin thanks to a special glue.

Optimize eyelash volume
If they don’t fall out, certain treatments to be used in place of mascara strengthen them (Double-eyelashes, Mavala, € 11.40). The cure can be continued after chemo to boost eyelash growth.
Make up the eyes
A line of brown pencil or eyeliner gives depth to the look.
The right gesture : pull the eyelid outwards and draw the line from the outside to the inside. A pencil line flush with the lower lashes highlights the look. On the eyelid, a touch of brown eyeshadow brings out the color of the iris.
