The first months of a baby’s life are marked by great changes. But new parents may not expect to find tufts of hair on the crib mattress. After a few weeks, a hairy baby can become almost bald. Rest assured, this hair loss is rarely a problem.
The fetus, explains the site Live Science, begins to develop hairs during first trimester of pregnancy. The hair loss simply indicates that the infant is adjusting to life outside the womb. Indeed, on the head of an adult person, each hair crosses a growth phase and an immobility phase. When the hair does not grow, they can fall. It is a regular and well distributed cycle.
In the case of a newborn baby, hormonal changes that it goes through during and after birth can make all the hairs fall out in the non-growth phase at the same time. And for good reason, mother and baby undergo enormous transformations during childbirth. At the onset of labor, the baby’s body begins to fabricatefromhormones that help it grow and circulate blood after it separates from the umbilical cord.
A physical reaction
Among these hormones, we find the cortisothe. Its role: to help the baby’s lungs to mature and to promote the production of energy and heat in the infant. In adults, this stress hormone causes a fight-or-flight response, and also helps direct the body’s energy to vital functions. During childbirth, stress therefore triggers the production of cortisol in the baby, which thus channels its energy towards the elements essential for survival, leaving aside the superfluous … such as hair.
After birth, all of the baby’s hair remains in the resting phase until more resources are available. They tend to fall out when the child is 8 to 12 weeks old, then grow back around the age of 3 to 7 months. But we will have to wait for the 2 years old child to see appear thicker hair.
The number and location of individual hair follicles is genetically determined. There is no point in shaving the baby’s head to stimulate hair regrowth. The color and the thickness may also change several times in the first few months or years. All parents have to do is enjoy each hair style different, without getting too attached to it.
